Raised by her mother and rock musician Todd Rundgren, she later learned that her biological father was Steven Tyler, lead singer of the band Aerosmith. Along with future star Alicia Silverstone, Tyler was featured in the band's video for "Crazy" in 1994. That same year, Liv made a strong feature debut as a teenager protective of her autistic brother who witnessed their parents' murder in Bruce Beresford's "Silent Fall". Appearing opposite Richard Dreyfuss and Linda Hamilton, the neophyte more than held her own.

She was featured as Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando's girlfriend and the object of a crush by an overweight pizza chef (Pruitt Taylor Vince) in James Mangold's "Heavy" (filmed in 1995; released in 1996) and as a twentysomething slacker who was not as perfect as she appeared in Allan Moyle's "Empire Records" (1995).

Tyler has also attracted the attention of several big league directors. In Bernardo Bertolucci's "Stealing Beauty" (1996), in which she appears naked a couple of times, she plays a hot young woman visiting Italy who has a profound effect on a dying author (Jeremy Irons).

Liv also appeared in Tom Hanks' 1996 directorial debut "That Thing You Do!", as the girlfriend of the lead singer of a 60s rock band.

She subsequently was featured as one of a trio of sisters romanced by Billy Crudup in Pat O'Connor's "Inventing the Abbots" (1997), as Bruce Willis' daughter in the blockbuster "Armageddon" (1998) and as the offspring of an eccentric in Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune" (1999).
