Curvaceous beauty Winslet made an impressive feature debut as Juliet Hulme, an intelligent, spoiled and sickly teenager who helps murder her best girlfriend's mother in Peter Jackson's acclaimed "Heavenly Creatures" (1994).

A third-generation thespian, the Reading, England native began her career as a child, landing roles in British TV commercials with stage roles quickly following. In her film debut, the sexy actress offered a riveting portrayal of a tubercular, highly intelligent teen who develops a strong rapport with a fellow student that leads to fantasy and murder.

She won raves and an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for her subtle performance as the spirited Marianne Dashwood in Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" (1995).

Winslet continued to appear in period pieces with "Jude" (1996), adapted from "Jude the Obscure" by Thomas Hardy. She displayed a maturity and magnetic screen presence as Sue, the title character's unconventional cousin whose mercurial nature creates problems as they fall in love. Later that year, she was a fine Ophelia to Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet", in the actor-director's all-star feature version of the Shakespeare classic.

The following year, Kate adopted an American accent as a Philadelphia socialite who finds unlikely romance with a lower-class artist (Leonardo DiCaprio) in James Cameron's blockbuster "Titanic", for which she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination.

Eschewing mainstream Hollywood parts as follow-ups, the hot actress with large breasts undertook two diverse romantic roles: as a free-spirited young mother who embarks on an unlikely love affair in Marrakech in Gillies MacKinnon's "Hideous Kinky" and as former cult member who falls for the man hired to deprogram her in Jane Campion's "Holy Smoke" (both 1999).

She returned to period fare playing a laundress who helps the Marquis de Sade smuggle out his writings in "Quills" (2000).
