Biography This pretty, petite, dark-haired, British ingenue made a strong impression as the blushing virgin Hero in Kenneth Branagh's film version of "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993). Kate Beckinsale carried on the early part of her career while simultaneously attending Oxford. She played Ethel in "The Prince of Jutland" (1994), a film that attempted to dramatize the real story of Elsinore that Shakespeare fictionalized in "Hamlet"; Ethel corresponded to Ophelia. Beckinsale was charming as the lead in "Marie-Louise or The Leave" (1995), a film about a young woman unable to find her boyfriend at a busy train station. She also headlined John Schlesinger's comedy "Cold Comfort Farm" (1995), as an orphan taken in by relatives. The daughter of the late comic actor Richard Beckinsale, she had the title role in the British TV adaptation "Jane Austen's 'Emma'" (shown in the USA on the Arts & Entertainment Network in 1997). |
