Juliette Lewis

Biography

This actress began on TV as the teenage daughter in the ABC sitcom "I Married Dora", the Showtime miniseries "Home Fires" (both 1987), and opposite Robert Mitchum in "A Family For Joe" (1990). Foreshadowing later roles, Lewis subsequently starred as a 15-year-old facing the death penalty for murder in the TV-movie, "Too Young To Die?" (1990), opposite then-off screen beau Brad Pitt. Lewis made her feature debut playing Chevy Chase's daughter in "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" and won critical acclaim and an Oscar nod as a vulnerable 15-year-old struggling for independence from her warring parents in Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear" (1991). Her sensuous scenes with a psychotic killer (played by Robert De Niro) in that film were much talked about and Lewis, with her small, brightly piercing eyes and pouty mouth, began to suggest an image of a waifish but free-spirited and sexually--indeed, sometimes dangerously--provocative young woman questing for answers and emotional fulfillment.

Lewis stepped in for Emily Lloyd in the ensemble of Woody Allen's "Husbands and Wives" (1992); in a film whose story of a crumbling marriage and the husband's affair with a much younger woman was read in light of the Allen-Mia Farrow breakup, Lewis sympathetically essayed the would-be "other woman" role, a college student who becomes precociously involved with her professor. Her quests have sometimes literally taken the form of a journey: in "Kalifornia" (1993) she traveled with a homicidal Brad Pitt; "Natural Born Killers" (1994) had her more than keeping up with Woody Harrelson in the killing department; while "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (1993) showed a quieter, more reflective side to these forays as Lewis pitstopped for a Midwestern romance with Johnny Depp. After a disastrous turn as Shirley MacLaine's granddaughter in "Evening Star" (1997), the actress underwent treatment for substance abuse and re-emerged in 1999 playing a mentally challenged woman who falls in love in the treacly "The Other Sister" (1999).
