Biography

A luminous brunette with porcelain skin and expressive blue eyes, sexy Isabelle Adjani (who can be seen naked at this free site) has lent a mixture of fragility and fierceness to her screen portrayals. Long recognized as one of France's leading actresses, she first garnered praise for her performance as a spoiled teenager in "La Gifle/The Slap" (1974) but earned international stardom as the obsessive-in-love title character in the Francois Truffaut-directed "The Story of Adele H." (1975). Her brilliant performance, which remains almost painful to watch, brought her a slew of critics prizes and her first Best Actress Academy Award nomination.

Isabelle subsequently appeared in such notable features as "Barocco" (1976), as the instigator of a plot to blackmail a politician, "The Tenant" (1976), as the suicidal former occupant of the apartment, and the 1979 remake of "Nosferatu", as the passive victim Lucy. At the 1981 Cannes Film Festival, she was cited as Best Actress for two roles: an unfaithful wife struggling with demons in "Possession" and the impoverished mistress of Alan Bates in "Quartet".

Teaming (as producer and star) with former companion and first-time director Bruno Nuytten, Adjani had one of her best screen roles portraying sculptor "Camille Claudel" (1988), the mistress of August Rodin. As she had done over a decade earlier as Adele Hugo, the actress fully conveyed the passion and spirit of a strong-willed woman who descends into madness and was once again rewarded with a Best Actress Oscar nomination. In a similar vein, she portrayed another fragile woman surrounded by violence in Patrice Chereau's "Queen Margot" (1994).

Isabele has fared less well in her American features, her talents virtually wasted in unworthy fare like "The Driver" (1978) and "Ishtar" (1987). Even her teaming with screen siren Sharon Stone in the 1996 remake of "Diabolique" was disappointing. In the latter, Adjani seemed out of her element as the meek, sickly wife of a belligerent school headmaster. After an absence of more than five years, she returned to the big screen in the starring role of "The Repentant" (2002).

In addition to her relationship with Nuytten (by whom she has a son), Adjani has had highly publicized liaisons with actors Warren Beatty and Daniel Day-Lewis (by whom she has a second son).
