Biography Hailed in the pages of Movieline for her rare ability to "project gravity and humanity", this attractive performer went from anonymity to cult favorite seemingly overnight (see her nude at this free site). After some acting Off-Broadway, her film debut in the little-seen "The Turning" (1992) and a 1993 guest spot on Fox's heartfelt "Class of '96", Anderson came into her own playing FBI agent Dr. Dana Scully, a forensics expert, on Fox's paranormal crime drama, "The X-Files" (1993-2002). Teamed with David Duchovny as investigators of unexplained phenomena, Anderson brought intelligence, restraint and a strong note of skepticism to her character and proved an excellent foil to her more credulous partner. The show lingered in the ratings cellar for some time before achieving cult status and critical cachet. By mid-second season, the series was a solid success and Anderson enchanted legions of fans on the Internet and beyond. She began to distinguish herself on the big screen in character turns like the floozy in "The Mighty" and a theater director tentatively finding romance in "Playing By Heart" (both 1998). Anderson also reprised her signature role in the feature version of "The X-Files" (1998) but remained constrained by Scully's skeptical demeanor. Anderson found the vehicle that proved she could carry a film when she undertook the role of Lily Bart in "The House of Mirth" (2000). Although funded by Showtime, the feature received rapturous reviews when it played at various film festivals and was in its for a theatrical release in 2000. As the frivolous Wharton heroine under the direction of Terence Davies, Anderson delivered a beautifully nuanced performance that sparked talk of end-of-year award consideration, but somehow her brilliant performance went overlooked. |
