Biography

Drew Barrymore became a cherished Middle-American icon playing Gertie, the cute little sister, in "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" (1982). After several more roles in inferior films, she began to attract less attention for her acting than for the increasingly sordid tabloid stories about her pre-adolescent addictions to drugs and alcohol. See her naked pictures here. Many saw her as following the tragic pattern set by John and Diana Barrymore. After undergoing rehab and publishing a memoir, "Little Girl Lost" (1989), the resilient teen made an impressive comeback in the early 1990s.

Barrymore portrayed Lolita-like teens in "Poison Ivy" (1992), "Guncrazy" (1992) and the ABC-TV movie "The Amy Fisher Story" (1993). The actress has been hailed as both emblematic of her time--a teenager who endured all the worst excesses of the 80s and then parlayed her survival into a marketable persona--and an accomplished young actress poised on the brink of major achievement.

The actress returned to big-budgeted features with 1994's disappointing Western "Bad Girls". She was next cast in "Boys On the Side" (1995), which showcased an acting depth and assuredness that had not previously been completely realized. The resurgent star appeared in two other 1995 features: "Mad Love", and "Batman Forever". She later earned critical praise for her turn in Wes Craven's "Scream" and in Woody Allen's musical "Everyone Says I Love You" (both 1996).

1998 saw her emerge as a romantic comedy lead with her turn as as Adam Sandler's love interest in the "The Wedding Singer" and opposite Luke Wilson in "Home Fries". She rounded out the year with a modernized take on the classic Cinderella tale in "Ever After".

Under her Flower Films (formed in 1994), Barrymore secured a deal with Fox 2000 that led to the 1999 comedy "Never Been Kissed". The actress next produced and starred in the appealing adaptation of the cheesy 70s TV series "Charlie's Angels" (2000) before tackling the based-on-fact role of single teen mom Beverly Donofrio in "Riding in Cars with Boys" (2001).
