Diane Lane

Biography

One of the few child performers of the late 1970s who made good, Lane graduated to mature, sultry roles in the 80s and 90s. She is naked at this free site. The native New Yorker began acting at age six in the La Mama Theater production of "Medea", performed in classical Greek. She spent the six subsequent summers touring with La Mama while appearing in various productions at the New York Shakespeare Festival including "The Cherry Orchard", "Agamemnon" and Elizabeth Swados' "Runaways".

At age 13, Lane made her feature debut co-starring with Sir Laurence Olivier in George Roy Hill's touching story of young love, "A Little Romance" (1979). With her long blonde hair and pert, angelic face, she became a teen sensation, enchanting adolescent males the world over and landing on the cover of TIME magazine. Lane continued to work in young adult films, most notably a starring role in the rock drama "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains" (1982) and Francis Ford Coppola's adaptations of S.E. Hinton's novels "The Outsiders", as the only female lead, and "Rumble Fish" (both 1983). In the latter, she was teamed with rising young star, Matt Dillon.

Diane gave strong performances throughout the 80s, although the films, for the most part, were lackluster. This period included playing the romantic lead opposite Richard Gere in Coppola's lavish, troubled period film, "The Cotton Club", and a kidnapped entertainer in Walter Hill's stylized "Streets of Fire" (both 1984). Less high-profile films included "The Big Town" (1987), "Lady Beware" (1987) and "Vital Signs" (1990). She won an Emmy nomination for her role as a vulnerable good-time girl on TV's popular miniseries "Lonesome Dove" (CBS, 1989). Lane had made her small-screen bow as the "Child Bride of Short Creek" (NBC, 1981) and also graced the TV-movies "Miss All-American Beauty" (CBS, 1982) and the thriller "Descending Angel" (HBO, 1990), was the younger version of the title character in "Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All" (CBS, 1994) and played Stella in the production of "A Streetcar Named Desire" (CBS, 1995).

Lane had three meaty roles in 1992, including the critically praised indie "My New Gun", "Knight Moves", opposite her then-husband Christopher Lambert, and Richard Attenborough's biopic, "Chaplin", as film star (and third Mrs. Chaplin) Paulette Goddard. She took maternity leave after "Indian Summer" (1993), returning in 1995 to play a secondary judge in the dreadful "Judge Dredd". She was a former lover of "Wild Bill" (Jeff Bridges) later that same year. Next up was an all-star gangster comedy, "Trigger Happy" (1996), alongside Richard Dreyfuss, Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, Burt Reynolds, Gregory Hines and Richard Pryor. Lane then appeared as Robin Williams' mother in Francis Ford Coppola's fantasy "Jack" (1996).

Lane was married to actor Christopher Lambert from 1988 to 1994.
