Biography

This tall, gorgeous blonde made an auspicious feature film debut as an icy Norwegian hitwoman in John Herzfeld's "Two Days in the Valley" (the nude photos are here) and further displayed her versatility as the prissy marriage-minded girlfriend of a drummer in Tom Hanks' directorial debut "That Thing You Do!" (both 1996).

The South African-born beauty began studying ballet at an early age and danced professionally in Johannesburg. By the time she was 16, Theron had begun a career as a model in Europe. She quit after a few years and relocated to the US where she resumed studying ballet with the Joffrey.

A knee injury ended her dancing career, so Charlize moved West to try her hand at acting. After working to lose her native accent, the young performer hit the audition circuit. She was almost cast as the lead in "Showgirls" (1995) but soon thereafter landed her starmaking role as Helga opposite James Spader in "2 Days in the Valley". One of that film's high points was a catfight with co-star Teri Hatcher.

Her success led to a comic role alongside Jeff Daniels in Jonathan Lynn's "Trial and Error" (1997) and a dramatic role as Keanu Reeves' wife in Taylor Hackford's thriller "Devil's Advocate" (1997).
