Biography

With her long legs, ample bee-stung lips and striking deep-set blue eyes, Angelina may have been destined for screen stardom even without benefit of talent or family name--both of which are considerable--but these attributes didn't hurt. The daughter of actor Jon Voight, she began studying acting at age 11 but had already made her screen debut as a tyke in a bit part in the Hal Ashby-directed comedy "Lookin' to Get Out" (filmed in 1980; released 1982), co-scripted and co-produced by her father.

Her real screen debut, though, came in "Cyborg II: Glass Shadows" (1993), a better than average direct-to-video sci-fi actioner in which she played a heroic human-machine hybrid. Jolie garnered more attention and better notices in the cyber-thriller "Hackers" (1995). which paired her with rising young Brit actor Jonny Lee Miller as teen computer whizzes battling an evil genius. While the film proved a disappointment, the co-stars fell in love and were briefly married (1996-99).

More film work readily followed, initially in small-scale character-driven indies ranging from "Foxfire", where she played a mysterious outsider named Legs Sadovsky who lends aid to some troubled teenaged girls, to "Love Is All There Is" (both 1996), Renee Taylor and Joseph Bolgna's romantic comedy take on "Romeo and Juliet". Angelina then landed the female lead in "Playing God" (1997) torn between her relationship with a gangster (Timothy Hutton) and a discredited doctor (David Duchovny) in his employ.

After acclaimed back-to-back small screen performances as the first wife of politician "George Wallace" (TNT, 1997) and the bisexual heroin-using model "Gia" (HBO, 1998), she found her film career taking off. "Playing By Heart" (1998) earned her praise as a club kid looking for love while "Pushing Tin" (1999) offered her a chance to display her comedic gifts as the lively white-trash wife of an air-traffic controller who has a sexy nude scene. Jolie went serious as a determined detective searching for a serial killer in "The Bone Collector" and as an inmate in a mental hospital in "Girl Interrupted" (both also 1999).
